Close Reading

Close reading is an uber-strategy that helps students comprehend challenging texts. Through thoughtful, critical analysis, our close reading classes help students develop a deep, precise understaning of the text’s form, craft, and deeper meaning. We focus on students’ success by helping them establish the habits of mind and necessary skills to unleash their full potential.

Some close reading courses:

  • Classic Literature

The Great Books of the world. Classic literature is timeless and opens up a perspective to different world and historical perspectives. Classic literature contains beautiful language, deep insights, and intricate story plots. Through insightful discussion, students gain critical analysis skills and improve their communication and writing abilities. Reading classic literature can enrich our lives and impact our relationships with others. Close reading classic literature will also assist on SAT/ACT and AP tests.

  • Nonfiction

Make read-world connections! Most informational and nonfiction texts also have unfamiliar vocabulary. Close reading nonfiction develops reading comprehension and builds background knowledge. This type of text will help students expand their knowledge, improve their vocabulary, and develop analytical skills.

  • Time for Kids, GK-6

The close reading Time for Kids class will help young students connect to the real world with authentic news. The course engages students with the world around them and inspires kids to be today’s learners and tomorrow’s leaders. The class will expand students’ knowledge, vocabulary, and analytical skills.

  • News & Current Events, G6-12

Reading and analyzing current events enriches curriculum, since current events touch on many subjects, e.g. history, science, etc. This interesting, engaging class helps students relate to what’s happening in their community, their country, and the world. Through critical thinking and discussion, students gain confidence by contributiong their own thoughts and opinions.
